By Henry L. Duval Santa Monica
The Santa Monica Daily Press featured Alice Walker for her lecture at the Santa Monica Public Library (“Teach the kids,” Oct. 1). Her subject was her children’s books “Why War Is Never A Good Idea.”
At first glance, I felt she is right. But then I thought back to our American Civil War of 1860-1865. It was fought primarily to keep southern states from separating from the United States. But the “side” added benefits of that civil war in freeing many people from “legal slavery” has to make that horrible war a necessity.
Even though I do not like the way the war in Iraq and the Middle East has been handled, I feel there is important reason to be there.
