SCOPE OF PIER REHAB EXPANDED
City officials are being asked to expand the scope of its ongoing Pier improvement project to include a vacant lot on the popular attraction. The work is intended to facilitate landing a development deal for an area between Playland Arcade and Pacific Park.
Council members are being asked to expand the original contract, awarded on August 8 to construct Phase III improvements on the Pier, by $484,760, taking the total amount to $2,629,612, including contingency.
Initially, the Pier additions included in the contract accounted for improvements to an area on the Municipal Pier extending about 200 feet westerly from the Beachcomber to the waterline, portions of the Newcomb Pier, as well as other structural repairs under the Pier, with a focus on improving public areas.
Tonight’s approval would expand the project to 370 Santa Monica Pier, an 11,000 sq. ft. vacant site located between Playland Arcade and Pacific Park. The expansion could help facilitate efforts in securing a site developer, as well as enabling temporary use of the location in the search for a permanent developer.
Currently, even temporary use of the building is not possible until structural work takes place.
Work on the area would begin this month and scheduled to be completed by April 2007, according to a city staff report.
