Another suggestion for women living alone: Get a dog. (”Staying safe in the city,” page 1, March 20) Not only are they great company, but they bark when someone rings the doorbell and would certainly scare away anyone who tries to break in. Beware of dog signs on gates and fences are also very helpful in keeping strangers away. There are many animal rescue groups around town and they always have lonely creatures who are very grateful for a new owner and home.
